Scuderia110 is honored to present this beautiful 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Gangloff Coupe. Behind its streamlined body is a story that began with a young designer in 1939 and returned to him nearly fifty years later.
A Gangloff design interrupted by war
In 1939, Lucien Schlatter was beginning his career at Gangloff when he was commissioned to design a streamlined Type 57 coupe for a client. His drawing, Gangloff design 4027, was dated June 19, 1939. The project never came to fruition at the time because of World War II.
The design remained unrealized for half a century. In 1989, a Bugatti owner approached Schlatter, then in his seventies, to help finish the details of his original design for a replacement body. The car presented here represents the realization of that 1939 Gangloff design.
Bugatti mechanicals and recent restoration
The car’s 3.3-liter twin-cam Type 57 engine received an original Bugatti factory supercharger. The chassis and mechanicals are described as period-correct, original Bugatti components.
More recently, the car underwent a mechanical restoration covering the engine, water pump, brakes, and electrical systems.
